  • Despite Sweden’s relatively small population of around 10.4 million, a significant number of producers choose to showcase their electric vehicles in the country’s automotive market.
  • In 2023, approximately 39 percent of the 290,000 cars sold in Sweden were battery electric vehicles (BEVs), placing Sweden seventh globally in terms of newly registered BEVs.
  • BEVs accounted for 14.6 percent of all car registrations in the European Union in 2023, as reported by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
  • The popularity of combustion engines in Sweden has been declining, with only 40 percent of newly registered cars running solely on combustion engines in the previous year. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 21 percent of car registrations in Sweden in that same year.
  • Car manufacturers have recognized the shift in consumer preferences and the potential policy changes, such as the EU’s ban on new fossil fuel cars, and have started adapting to the new environment. Volvo Cars, for example, aims to exclusively manufacture electric cars by 2030.
